What's Inside that Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?

Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress constructed from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their quest for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode has them relive a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him for good.

Heads Up: This discussion details significant events for the concluding episodes.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a Henry as a boy encounter an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a fight for life.

In keeping with mysteries this season, the full story behind the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Given what is revealed about Brenner's work, the case most likely held samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy ended up in the Abyss, coming back hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory demonstrates how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to gain strength.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the ultimate battle to come.
