What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
