The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Ashes Squad
England have opted for a 12-man selection just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's selection indicates that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the first Test to decide whether the venue conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about their fast bowler's condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to miss out if Bashir enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted five past matches.
In those games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable choice.
Spin Options Considered
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
However the coach has chosen to stick with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
