Privacy Online is an Falsehood’: Aussie Youth Faces Charges Over Supposed Mass Shooting Hoax in United States

A youth from the state of NSW has been formally accused after allegedly making multiple hoax reports to emergency services – an act known as “swatting” – falsely claiming mass shootings were happening at large commercial and educational institutions in the US.

Cross-Border Investigation Culminates in Legal Action

The Australian federal police charged the young male on December 18th. They claim he is part of a suspected distributed digital network of offenders hiding behind keyboards in order to trigger an “urgent and significant police response”.

“Frequently young males aged from 11 to 25, are engaging in crime types like swatting calls, doxing and computer intrusion to gain status, infamy and prestige in their online groups.”

In connection with the probe, authorities seized several computers and phones and an illegal weapon discovered in the juvenile’s home. This seizure was conducted under Taskforce Pompilid established in the final quarter of 2025.

Authorities Deliver a Stark Warning

Graeme Marshall, speaking generally, advised that individuals believing they can break the law with an internet connection and encrypted identities are being targeted.

The AFP confirmed it initiated its investigation upon receiving information from the FBI.

Jason Kaplan, from the FBI's international wing, stated that the “risky and disturbing offense” of hoax 911 calls put lives at risk and wasted vital emergency resources.

“This case shows that secrecy online is an myth,” he said in a combined announcement with the AFP.

He added, “We are committed to collaborating with the AFP, our overseas colleagues, and tech companies to find and prosecute people who misuse digital tools to inflict damage to communities.”

Court Process

The accused has been indicted on multiple counts of misuse of telecom services and a further count of unlawful ownership of an illegal weapon. The individual could face up to 14 years in prison.

“Our pledge (is|remains) to preventing the harm and pain participants of this online crime network are causing to society, operating under the false idea they are untraceable,” the assistant commissioner said.

The teenager was due to face a NSW youth court on this week.
