Larry Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a batch of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
He remarked in an announcement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward following their development".
The prominent academic, who once headed the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his association with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed communications demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with the financier until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 arrest for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the technology organization stated it respected Summers' decision to depart.
"We value his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he brought to the Board," OpenAI commented.
Political Context
This news comes after the two houses of the US legislature agreed on this week to endorse a measure that would require the US justice department to release its records on the case.
The legislation will then proceed to the desk of President Trump for approval. The President has said he expects to approve the measure, after modifying his position on the matter following pushback from his base.
Email Contents
A batch of Epstein-related correspondence disclosed by the legislative panel recently included several high-profile figures in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The communications revealed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to link the academic to notable world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the messages were made available with the public, he stated he accepted "complete accountability for my misguided decision to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he wanted "to rebuild confidence and mend relationships with the persons nearest to me".
Professional History
The professor served in leadership roles under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He led the university from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties earlier on Monday, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy institute in the capital where the professor was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was not affiliated with the organization.
He joined the board of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its chief executive OpenAI's head.
