Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Figure, Dies at 81 Years Old
Global audiences mourns the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born musician and actor whose captivating voice played a key role in popularizing reggae music across the globe. The artist has died at the age of 81.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am thankful for his loved ones, friends, peers in the arts and colleagues who shared his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, their son and daughter.
Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic sound and uplifting spirit earned him a large and longstanding fanbase.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972 drama film The Harder They Come, a performance that received critical praise and is considered a landmark of film in Jamaica.
He was one of just a handful of artists, including Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
