Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Tropical Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by US Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based private equity firm for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment that the family owners has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The family released a statement saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is developed, featuring a substantial range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted domestic holidaymakers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
