A uniquely yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us verify the video.
Our team is analyzing images and video circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures originated was based on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
