American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks due to climate and other issues.

Over 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," he remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports indicated travel would be delayed due to a lack of employees - one of the highest since the shutdown began.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead made a personal plea to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," the official stated.

On that day, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth most active airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.
