As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization would also receive a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese to play for the Chicago franchise, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 soon, bolsters a young lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a difficult season, finishing last in the American League Central but showing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, surpassing the all-time record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was limited to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Despite striking out 64 Ks, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and 977 Ks in 892 games. Early in his career playing mainly at first base, he has spent most of his time to third.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's clutch hitting were on center stage during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing two-base hit that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind one-run win. The next night in the championship game against the Team USA, he hit a tying shot in the second inning, helping Japan's subsequent championship win.

The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be formally introduced at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
